Out of the box?

How to be out of the box, when your in a box!

One of the daily environment scenarios is a situation where people put themselves into a confined space, shoulder to shoulder with others. An elevator is such a scenario. While it’s moving between floors you are confined to a small room with four walls, and are not able to leave. And the same goes for anybody else in the elevator with you. The normal social distances held between others are minimized, letting people get physically close to each other. Thus creating a situation where possibly offenders get closer than normally, and you can’t just step away if a conflict is arising. You will have to handle the conflict there and then, and even wait for the doors to open, before being able to get away.

Are you looking for trouble? While the walls and corners limit your movement they can be used to ensure that your back is covered. Just as the walls confine your movements and can make certain techniques unusable, the walls can be used as support and opening up to other techniques like bouncing the offenders head off the walls.

These techniques are not only for confined spaces like elevators, but can also be used in other areas were space is limited; a waiting room full of furniture, a hallway or an aisle in a bus. Thus your techniques will be practice in the box, and still be used out of the box.

The box we use is a 300 kilo wooden box, filled with electronics given the possibility to enhance the scenario based drill. From lights to sound, and the possibility to view the escalation of the conflict on video it gives a unique possibility to work and learn from conflicts in confined spaces.
