Reality Based Self Defence
Reality Based Self Defence(RBSD) embraces efficiency and effectiveness for the average person, basing it on the strengths of the individual , the expected environment (“reality”) and the expected mental/physical impact. The underlying concept is “You will do what you have learned”, and you will get the best odds by practicing your strengths in an environment that is close to reality.
The concept of martial arts covers many different areas, but can be boiled down to 3 categories: Sports(based on rule based fighting), Traditional(Based on cultural heritage) and Reality Based(based on reality). Each category has its own expectations, rules and expected results.
Common aspects of reality-based self-defense:
· Realistic Scenario-Based Training. Scenarios covering different areas:
o Attackers shouting / threatening
o Confined spaces
o Uneven terrain
o Objects and debris on and around the ground
o Everyday clothing
o Weapon( props)
· Graduated Response based on Scenario training. Different levels of threat demand different levels of response. Do not use excessive force from a legal standpoint.
· The different stages of conflict – Pre-Conflict, Conflict, Post-Conflict.
o Pre-conflict
§ Training and cues/indicators of danger/conflict.
o Conflict
§ Confrontation
§ Response to an attack.
o Post-conflict
§ Escape,
§ Check yourself for wounds
§ First aid
§ Learning from the experiences.
· Techniques that are based on instinct and kept simple, because in the heat of a conflict fine motor skills are much harder to do, and probably not possible, basing movement on gross motor skills. All areas of techniques are covered; striking, blocks, takedowns and throws, ground fighting, defending against holds, knives, guns and multiple assailants.
The goal of RBSD is to come as close and safely as possible to a conflict through realistic training. To train short of that means to cheat yourself, and in the long run developing a false sense of security.
